Brand Story
The Story of Shaalik
Crafted In Nature. Defined By Elegance.
This story begins with a pair of hands.
Not a boardroom. Not a business plan. Not an investor deck.
Just a pair of hands that believed — deeply, stubbornly, unconditionally — that the things we make by hand carry something that machines never can. A heartbeat. A memory. A soul.
My name is Mandira Mukherjee. I am the founder of Shaalik Artisan Collective. And everything you see here — every bag woven by hand, every botanical formula poured in small batches, every wooden box laser engraved with a bird that took me three years to name — began with one question that would not leave me alone.
Why does luxury have to come from somewhere else?
The Beginning — A Bag and a Belief
India has been making extraordinary things by hand for five thousand years.
Our weavers know patterns that no machine has ever replicated. Our artisans work with rattan, leather, and natural fibre using techniques passed down through generations — not learned from a manual, but absorbed through childhood, through watching, through the memory of the hands.
And yet somehow we had been taught to reach for the imported, the manufactured, the mass-produced. To believe that luxury meant a European label. That handmade meant cheap. That Indian craft was folk art — beautiful, but not premium. Not for the global stage.
I refused to accept that.
Shaalik began as a single handcrafted bag. Made in India. By Indian hands. With materials sourced from Indian artisans who had spent their lives mastering their craft. Priced at what it was truly worth — not discounted into invisibility, but celebrated at the price of genuine luxury.
The name Shaalik comes from the grace of the Shaalik bird — grounded, authentic, quietly extraordinary. Everything I wanted the brand to be.
The first bag sold. Then the second. Then a hundred.
And slowly something remarkable happened. Women across India — in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai — began carrying Shaalik bags not because they could not afford something imported, but because they chose India. Consciously. Proudly.
That choice became our foundation.
The Pivot — A Question About Summer
In the summer of 2025I sat in my studio in New Delhi with a desk fan that could not keep up with a 44°C afternoon and a cooling spray that left my skin feeling stripped and chemical-smelling.
I picked up the bottle and read the label.
Alcohol Denat. Synthetic fragrance. Camphor. And a list of ingredients that read like a chemistry exam — none of which I recognised as botanical, natural, or Indian.
I put it down and I did not pick it up again.
Instead I asked a question that would consume the next six months of my life.
Why does every cooling product in India strip your skin? Why synthetic fragrance when Kannauj Vetiver and Mysore Sandalwood exist? Why one cooling agent when two work infinitely better? And why — in a country with five thousand years of botanical wisdom — is there not a single cooling mist made entirely from plants?
There was no answer. Only an absence. A gap so wide you could build a brand inside it.
So I did.
Six Months in the Studio
I am not a cosmetic chemist. I am a founder with an obsession and a willingness to start from the beginning, make mistakes, throw batches away, and start again.
I learned about Menthol and Menthyl Lactate — two cooling agents that work in sequence rather than competition. Menthol for the instant freeze. Menthyl Lactate for the sustained chill that lasts two to three hours without reapplication. No other brand in India had combined them.
I learned about Panthenol — Vitamin B5 — the active tissue repair ingredient that works underneath the cool, nourishing your skin barrier while Menthol works above it. No other Indian cooling product carried it.
I learned about Plant Squalane from sugarcane — the skin-identical lipid that creates a dewy protective film, locks fragrance to your skin for eight or more hours, and adds a glow so natural it looks like your skin on its best day. No other cooling mist in India had it.
And I learned about live botanicals — real Vetiver root from the distilleries of Kannauj, hand-dried Blood Orange wheels, Bold Menthol crystal shards — that could live inside a glass flacon, visible to the eye, active in every spray, connecting the person holding the bottle to the plant that grew in Indian soil.
India's first Dual-Cryo cooling mist with Panthenol (Vitamin B5) and Plant Squalane. 100% botanical. Alcohol-free. Derma-safe.
What India First Really Means
The phrase India First on our label is not marketing language.
It is a verified claim. Zero domestic or international brands available in Indian retail offer the combination of a Dual-Cryo engine with active Panthenol (Vitamin B5) and Plant Squalane in a 100% botanical alcohol-free formula.
We checked. Thoroughly.
But India First means more than a formula. It means that Kannauj — the city that has been distilling botanical essences for India for a thousand years — is on our ingredient list. That Mysore Sandalwood — the most prized fragrance material India produces — is in our bottles. That the artisans who weave our bags learned their craft from their parents, who learned from their parents, who learned from theirs.
India First means we chose to build something extraordinary here. Not in spite of being Indian. Because of it.
The Vision — What Shaalik is Building
We are not building a product company.
We are building a movement.
A movement that says Indian craft belongs at the highest table of global luxury. That a handwoven rattan bag from an Indian artisan is as extraordinary as anything from Paris or Milan. That a botanical cooling mist made in New Delhi with Kannauj Vetiver and Mysore Sandalwood is as sophisticated as anything from London or New York.
We are building a brand that Indian women and men reach for not because it is affordable — but because it is exceptional. Because it is honest. Because it is theirs.
By 2027 — Shaalik will carry four botanical mist variants, an attar roll-on line, a cooling body balm, a solid perfume, a hair mist, and a complete after-shower ritual collection. All botanical. All alcohol-free.
By 2028 — Shaalik bags and botanicals will be in premium retail across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. In gifting hampers for India's most discerning corporate clients. In the hands of brides and their families at weddings across the country.
By 2030 — Shaalik will be the name that comes to mind when the world thinks of Indian artisan luxury. Not niche. Not boutique. Not alternative. The definitive choice.
We are not building for investors. We are building for the artisans whose hands make every piece. For the customers who choose Indian craft consciously. For the India that has always deserved to be celebrated at this level.
What We Believe
We believe the best luxury is made slowly.
Not mass-produced in a factory. Not formulated in a lab with synthetic shortcuts. Made in small batches, by hand, with ingredients sourced from the places that have grown them the longest.
We believe Indian craft is not folk art.
It is world-class design executed through human skill. The rattan weaver who takes three days to complete one bag is not a folk artisan. She is a master. And her work belongs on the global stage at the price it deserves.
We believe your skin deserves honesty.
Not alcohol that strips. Not synthetic fragrance that fakes. Not a label you cannot read. Every ingredient in every Shaalik product is there because it works, it is botanical, and it is worth being proud of.
We believe India First is not nationalism.
It is a quality standard. When you source Kannauj Vetiver from Kannauj and Mysore Sandalwood from Mysore and handwoven rattan from artisans who have spent their lives mastering the craft — you are not choosing India out of patriotism. You are choosing excellence. India just happens to be where the excellence lives.
A Letter From Mandira
If you have read this far — thank you.
Thank you for caring about where your things come from. For believing that the hands that made something matter. For choosing to hold something made slowly, with love, in India.
Every bag that leaves my studio has been touched by hands that know what they are doing. Every bottle of mist has been poured in a batch that I personally tested before it was sealed. Every wooden box has been chosen for its grain, its weight, its quiet beauty.
I am a one-woman studio that became a team. A team that became a brand. A brand that is becoming a movement.
And every single order — whether it is a rattan wallet or a wooden box mist or a gifting hamper for a Diwali celebration — is not a transaction to us. It is a vote. A vote that says Indian craft is extraordinary. That botanical luxury is possible. That slow, honest, handmade things deserve a place in a fast world.
Thank you for voting with us.
With love and vetiver,
